At the 37th International Geological Congress (IGC) in Busan, South Korea, the SCRREEN3 project reaffirmed its dedication to strengthening Europe’s raw material security.
Managed under Horizon Europe and coordinated by the Bureau De Recherches Géologiques et Minières (BRGM), SCRREEN3 was featured at booth G16-G18, where EuroGeoSurveys, BRGM, and the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) shared project materials and engaged with attendees interested in Europe’s raw materials sector. This year’s IGC, themed “The Great Travellers: Voyages to the Unifying Earth,” marked the Congress’s return to an in-person format following its last virtual edition due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In alignment with IGC’s mission to support cross-disciplinary exchange on Earth sciences, SCRREEN3’s involvement underscores its mission to promote a sustainable, resilient future for resource use and environmental stewardship. The exhibit emphasized the project’s advancements in understanding raw materials’ availability and their lifecycle, underlining the essential role of geological science in future resource management.
The Congress, which drawn together leading minds in Earth sciences from across the globe, served as an invaluable venue for initiatives like SCRREEN to align with international efforts toward addressing key challenges related to environmental sustainability and resource security.
The core objective of SCRREEN3 is to continue building and animating a comprehensive Expert Network to deliver critical advice supporting EU-level decision-making. This network addresses the critical raw materials (CRMs) identified in the European CRM assessments of 2020 and 2023, along with associated value chains. The ongoing work of SCRREEN3 in this domain is essential to fostering Europe’s raw material supply resilience through informed, research-driven policies.
