Why are some mineral raw materials considered “critical”?

New technologies, including technologies that contribute to sustainable development and the energy transition, rely increasingly on mineral raw materials. Materials are used in larger quantities, and an increasingly broader range of materials is used and combined, resulting in complex products. This is pushing the demand for more and more diverse mineral raw materials, and it is not guaranteed that this growing demand can be met by an increased supply.
